SUMMARY:2024 Summer Challenge
DESCRIPTION:2024 SUMMER CHALLENGE\nThe summer challenge will be based on and inspired by a 1970’s vintage Christmas wrapping paper\, a sample of which will be distributed at the May meeting. You will construct a quilted item using fabrics in the same color scheme as the paper. You may add any other fabrics that you wish\, but the colors from the paper must be distinguishable in your quilt\, and all the colors from the paper must be used. Bring your finished quilt to the September meeting (9/19/24)\, and we will vote for our favorite. The top 3 vote getters will win cash prizes ($50/$30/$20). You get to keep your item\, but if you don’t want to and it is a size suitable for a Comfort Quilt\, you can donate it to them. \nADDITIONAL GUIDELINES: The paper colors must be used within the quilt design and not just in the border(s). The minimum size is 10″ x 10″ and the maximum size is no more than 40″ on a side. All items must be constructed to include 3 layers (top\, batting\, back) and be held together with stitching. A qualifying item may include\, but not be limited to\, quilts\, clothing\, purses\, totes\, pillows\, or other accessories\, etc. \nAny questions can be directed to Missy Smith. SUMMARY:Workshop with Blaire Gagnon - A Love of Vintage
DESCRIPTION:Resources to bring:\n1) Clean vintage blocks\, embroideries\, linens\, tea towels\, tablecloths\, handkerchiefs\, cross\nstitch pieces\, clothing\, fabric and/or any other item that you would like to consider\nrepurposing into a new quilted item. I will discuss cleaning at the lecture\, but you may\nwant to purchase Retro Clean before that night so that you can clean your pieces before\nclass. Many stains and brown discoloration can come out using Retro Clean. \n2) Ideas to keep in mind while choosing your items: make do\, embrace scarcity &\nlimitations\, stains & holes are part of the textile’s history\, negative space is good\,\nchoose a unifying design element such as color\, size\, block elements. \n3) Additional fabric that you might want to play with for coping strips\, borders\, setting\npieces\, block construction\, block layering\, or improv sewing. To make one of my sample\nwall hangings approximately 21 inches square\, I limited myself to 1 block and 2 pieces of\nfabric for the top. One piece was about a fat quarter and the other just over 1 yard. For\nanother\, I used 1 block and small scraps of circa 1930s fabric. Some were only 1 inch\,\nothers larger. \n4) Pencil\, paper\, notebook\, graph paper\, calculator for doing layout and sizing calculations. \n5) A piece of flannel\, batting\, or flannel backed tablecloth to use as a design wall. Having\nand using a design wall is important for all projects as is letting the design develop as\nyou go. \n6) A camera is also very important. A cell phone camera works great to save layout ideas.\nIn addition\, a camera helps to give you a view that is farther removed from the project. \n7) Sewing machine\, machine sewing thread\, cutting mat\, rulers (a variety of sizes will give\nyou flexibility for squaring up and cutting strips but at least a 6.5” x 24.5” and a 12.5”\nsquare)\, rotary cutter\, cutting mat\, pins etc. The normal workshop/sew in supplies you\nthink you might need. A small pair of quality scissors for trimming threads off the back\nof embroideries. \nResources not to bring (In my opinion)! \nYour much cherished inherited or purchased textiles that you would be devastated if they did not come out perfect in your first vintage project. \nWhy? No one needs that kind of pressure for their first attempt at working with vintage. \nYes\, this workshop is designed for you to do something that you have not done and to challenge you to think outside your norm\, but I do not want you to stress over having a fabulous\, finished project. Focus on the process\, not the finished project. \nResources I will bring that you can purchase to add to your project if you want: \n1) Clean vintage quilt blocks\, embroideries\, linens\, & cross stitch. \n2) Fabrics that I have purchased from other quilters’ stashes that I think will work well with the blocks and other items that I will be bringing. These fabrics will vary in size/yardage and be priced at either $4 or $6 per yard. \n3) Lightweight fusible interfacing to stabilize a block before using.

Scarlett has designed fabric\, modern quilts\, art quilts and wearable art. DESCRIPTION:NBQA Silent Auction and General Membership Meeting for April 24th\, 2025 \nProceeds to benefit the New England Quilt Museum\, The Seabees Museum (where all our quilt show items are stored)\, and one of the missions of the United Methodist Church. \nWe will begin the Silent Auction at 6:00 p.m. and it will run for one hour. We ask that you bid in dollar amounts only. An example would be if you bid $10.00 on an item\, the next person cannot bid $10.50. That bid would be disqualified. You can only pay for your items by cash or check (check made out to NBQA) please. \nThere will also be refreshments in the kitchen from 6:00-7:00 and yes\, please feel free to bring something of your choosing to share. This is also a great time to renew your membership. \nAt 7:00 p.m. we will begin a short business meeting followed by Show and Tell (this timeframe will allow the volunteers to determine who the bid winners are). \nOnce the winners are determined\, your name will be called\, and you will collect your card(s) and bring them to the cashier. We will have four cashiers to accommodate everyone. You will pay the cashier with cash or check; they will stamp your card(s) and you can pick up your item(s) at that time. A volunteer will be there to help you and please remember to turn in your card(s) to that volunteer. \nWe have over 130 brand new items for you to bid on. A description will be near the items\, we ask that you do not open the clear bags. SUMMARY:Shoo Fly Raffle Quilt Workshop with Blaire Gagnon and Paula Weston
DESCRIPTION:At the May workshop\, we will work on piecing Shoofly Blocks for the 2026 raffle quilt.  This will also be a technique class because we will be demonstrating how one can piece these blocks accurately using a variety of methods.  Paula Weston and I\, and others will illustrate the techniques we use.  While the block is simple\, its beauty is in its precision.  So this is a perfect time to learn how to cut\, piece\, and trim blocks accurately so you do not lose your points.  The larger quilt design is Pat Sloan’s Shoo Fly quilt that she designed for the Secret Life of Color sew along that completes blocks in 3 finished sizes 3″\, 6″ & 9″ Pat Sloan Shoofly block 3 sizes.dpp.  Here is a link to her project page with images of the quilt.  2022 The Secret Lives of Color – Pat Sloan’s I Love To Make Quilts.  We have permission from Pat to use her pattern for our raffle quilt.
