Binding 101 – aka “Binding Technique Needs Improvement”
Supply List
- 2 – 12” x 18″ quilted quilt sandwiches (stitched together ~ backing, batting, top)
- 2 – 2” binding strips* cut on crosswise grain, the circumference of “quilt” plus 12″
- 2 – 2¼” binding strips* cut on crosswise grain, the circumference of “quilt” plus 12″
- Sewing machine with a walking foot – built-in or attachment
- Sewing supplies – the usual suspects
- Small ruler with 45° angle marking
- White chalk mechanical pencil (Bohin™ is my favorite)
- Mechanical pencil, matching threads
- Hot, dry iron
- Hand sewing needle, thimble if you use one.
- A small bottle of Elmer’s™ White School Glue, not a glue stick or regular Elmer’s, this if the only glue that works well for this technique.
- Spray starch can with lid – Heavy duty preferred, regular okay too
*** Before cutting binding strips follow these steps:
a. Starch fabric that will be used for binding with heavy-duty spray starch, Iron until dry and crisp or let dry overnight, Steam iron in the morning
b. Cut strips for binding as above
